I Tried It So You Don’t Have To! Donating Plasma: One Side Hustle that I would not do again.

Part of my series where I try different side hustles and share what’s actually worth it… and what’s not.

I was on my way to work this morning thinking about all the side hustles I’ve tried over the years.

Some were great. Some were fine. And some… you literally could not pay me to do again.

Donating plasma falls firmly into that last category.

The Hook (aka Why I Tried It)

Like most people, I got sucked in by the intro offer.

“$100 per visit for your first few donations!”

Sounds easy, right? Sit there, scroll your phone, make some quick cash. Wrong.

After the initial promo (I think it was around 5 visits), the payout drops to about $75. Which sounds okay… until you realize what you’re actually trading for it.

The Reality

Let me paint the picture.

You’re hooked up to a machine that is literally pulling your blood out, separating your plasma, and putting the rest back in your body. It makes you hyper aware that your body is being…drained, willingly. For 45 to 90 minutes.

And during that time?

You cannot get up for any reason and if you do, then say good bye to the money you were hoping to make and the time you just wasted.

Now, let’s talk hydration.

You have to drink a ton of water beforehand so your body can produce enough plasma. But if you do that (like I did), you’re stuck laying there for up to an hour and a half trying not to think about how badly you need to pee. It’s a mental game at that point.

The Experience

All usually went well, other than the normal anxiety and shame that came with donating. I did have one altering case, where the process dragged closer to 90 minutes and the waterfall thoughts were coming. I kept asking why it was taking so long… and was told it was basically on me. Later, it turned out the line was blocked.

Cool. Cool cool cool.

Also, and I’m just being honest here, the environment wasn’t exactly comforting. It felt more transactional than caring. Which, when you’re being poked, prodded, and hooked up to a machine, matters more than you’d think.

The Pay (aka The Final Straw)

So you make it through.

You’ve done the thing. You earned your money.…or so you think.

You get paid on a prepaid debit card.

And then:

Fees when you use it

Fees if you don’t use it

Fees that make you question your life choices

It genuinely felt like I lost a chunk of what I earned just trying to access it.

That was it for me.

Who Might Like This

In my highly unscientific observation, the people thriving in this system were:

  • Big, burly dudes

    • Not bothered by needles

    • Able to donate fast: In and out in ~45 minutes

    • Completely unfazed by the whole experience

If that’s you… honestly, you might do just fine.

Final Verdict

For me?

2/10 stars. Would not recommend.

Not because it’s impossible. Not because it’s a scam.

But because when you factor in:

  • the time

  • the discomfort

  • the mental stress

  • and the fees

…it just wasn’t worth it.

If you’re thinking about trying side hustles, I’m probably going to start sharing more of these, what worked, what didn’t, and what I’d actually recommend.

Because I’ve tried a LOT.

And not all money is worth how you earn it.
